Unbeaten Andover, Class 1A power Warroad earn top seeds for girls’ hockey state tournament

The Huskies were Class 2A runners-up to Edina a year ago; two of Warroad’s three losses came against Andover.

Andover goalie Courtney Stagman made a third-period save in her team’s 6-0 victory over Elk River in the Class 2A, Section 7 final Thursday in Blaine.

Andover, the only unbeaten team left in the state, and Warroad are the top seeds in their respective classes for the girls’ hockey state tournament, the Minnesota State High School League announced Sunday.

Andover, which was unbeaten last season before losing to Edina in the Class 2A championship game, is the No. 1 seed in Class 2A. Warroad, which is making its seventh consecutive state tournament appearance, is the top seed in Class 1A.

Andover (27-0) will play Brainerd/Little Falls in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Huskies and Edina, the No. 2 seed, also met in the 2020 championship game, with Andover winning.

Edina, making its eighth consecutive appearance, is going for its fifth state championship in six seasons. Edina (25-2), which lost 4-0 to Andover in January, will open the Class 2A tournament at 11 a.m. Thursday against Northfield.

The other quarterfinal matchups feature No. 3 seed Minnetonka against Burnsville and No. 4 seed Maple Grove facing off with No. 5 Gentry Academy.

Warroad (23-3-1), whose only losses during the regular season were to Andover twice and Class 2A Holy Family, will play River Lakes in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

No. 2 seed Orono will open the 1A quarterfinals against Mankato East on Wednesday.

Defending state champion Proctor/Hermantown (19-7-1) is the No. 3 seed and will play Albert Lea in the 1A quarterfinals. No. 4 seed South St. Paul will take on fifth-seeded Luverne.

Wednesday’s Class 1A quarterfinals

11 a.m.: Mankato East (21-5) vs. No. 2 Orono (24-3)

1 p.m.: Albert Lea (14-10-1) vs. No. 3 Proctor/Hermantown (19-7-1)

6 p.m.: River Lakes (16-12) vs. No. 1 Warroad (23-3-1)

8 p.m.: No. 5 Luverne (23-3) vs. No. 4 South St. Paul (15-10-2)

Thursday’s Class 2A quarterfinals

11 a.m.: Northfield (19-5-3) vs. No. 2 Edina (25-2)

1 p.m.: Burnsville (22-5-1) vs. No. 3 Minnetonka (22-6)

6 p.m.: Brainerd/Little Falls (17-11-0) vs. No. 1 Andover (27-0)

8 p.m.: No. 5 Gentry Academy (22-6) vs. No. 4 Maple Grove (20-6-2)
